Jacob Du Bois

Biographical Information

Jacob DuBois lived all his long life on the farm in Hurley. His name appears as a member of the Hurley Company in 1715 and as one of the Town Trustees in 1719. He was a freeholder of Hurley in 1728.

About 1714 he heard that there was a large quantity of good land for sale in the southern part of New Jersey. He took a trip to Salem County and with his sister and John and Isaac Van Meteren purchased 3000 acres of Daniel Cox of Burlington. His sister and her sons John & Isaac Van Meteren in 1718 conveyed 1200 acres to Jacob DuBois as his share. There is no record that Jacob ever lived in Jersey. Barent, one of his sons, settled at Pilesgrove, Salem Co., later called Pittsgrove.

Jacob inherited part of his fathers farm in Hurley, New York. In 1714 Jacob along with his sister Sarah and the latters two sons, Isaac and John Van Meter, purchased 3,000 acres of land in Salem County, New Jersey. Three of Jacob's sons, Barent, Louis, and Gerrit settled there. Gerrit returned to Ulster County, New York. A grandson of Louis DuBois, namely Abraham, son of Abraham the Patentee, settled in Somerset County, New Jersey. Jacob divided the purchase into four lots. Lot # 1 was conveyed to his son Barent and lot # 2 was conveyed to his son Louis. According to the DuBois record Louis made this purchase of land in Salem County, New Jersey in 1726 a four sided tract of 350 acres, lying on the branch of the Alloway Creek. This with the 300 acres from his father, and a tract of 441 acres called Quehocking purchased from Achsah Lambert in 1749, brought his land holdings in Salem County to 1091 acres.
